Penny has been a textile artist for 17 years, teaching and exhibiting at many art galleries, museums and hospitals. She places a great emphasis on every participant’s wellbeing when participating in arts and crafts.
Penny’s pieces are predominately made from soft unspun wool fibres which, when worked with soap and water, become a piece of fabric known as handmade felt. This technique is thought to be at least 5,000 years old and has led Penny to become a member of the Heritage Crafts Association.
Penny’s interest and knowledge of traditional techniques is also constantly being informed and challenged by being involved with the International Feltmakers Association.
Penny’s first degree was in Fashion and Textiles. This is affirmed with some of her work being wearable art. She is also a qualified teacher and has a Masters in Art, Health and Wellbeing.
Always happy when surrounded by nature, this is reflected in Penny’s choice of colours and textures in her artworks. She produces contemplative artwork with a nod to the unseen worlds of the imagination. Penny’s work attempts to reflect the natural environment and how it can give us a sense of being part of a bigger picture. She often works closely with themes around loss, but also the fact that nature uplifts us and cares for us too.
“Handmade felt takes time to produce. Each piece is unique. Take time to enjoy what is around you and join the slow revolution.”
