Kate Wiltshire – Painter
Kate is a landscape artist working in oils, mostly from my studio. She accepts commissions from photographs that others have taken but no photograph can match the experience of being in the landscape.
Kate spends a lot of time walking in the lovely wild places where she lives in Warwickshire; yet she rarely paints outside. Apart from the unpredictability of the weather, she prefers to spend outdoors time just looking, maybe take a few photographs to remind her of a certain place, the light, the effects of the weather.
Kate is much more interested in recreating a feeling of a place, a certain moment when the light and the peace impresses itself into a memory that she can express on canvas. Walking home, that memory becomes distilled so that when she is in her studio she can begin to work.
Kate likes to use a limited palette, with a ‘family” of highly saturated colours which she can whiten or mix searching for a coherent hue that is consistent with the light and weather conditions and the emotions that can be conveyed by her subject.
Painting is a constant learning process, exploring ideas and trying to move away from the reality of a place and to move much more towards capturing the feeling of the moment.
