Gordon Connell - Painter
Gordon’s paintings play with colour and texture, they explore the intense shimmering quality it is possible to achieve using translucent layers of paint – mainly blue. He uses oils and gels on canvas or board, sometimes on distressed surfaces with rough edges and character formed by previous use. The work is abstract and gestural, often derived from the raw energy of marks found on city walls and streets.
He is interested in perception and cognition, the way colours react together and how they can evoke feelings and memories. The aim is a radiant abstraction with nothing recognisable and no narrative - in many ways the paintings are an antidote for reality.
“Inspired by bright colours and urban grit, this is colourfield with kick.”
